100s CARPET RACE!!Every Friday, our grade 1/2 class would compete for a race against the clock... and against another teacher in the school to see who could lay out all numbers from 1-100 the fastest (we did this forwards, backwards, and skip counted by 2's).
This week, another student teamed up with me to compete the 100s carpet in 5 minutes and 55 seconds!! WOW!!! PIZZA JOINT MENUGrade 1/2 created a Pizza Menu Board with select toppings; each topping represented a fraction of the pizza.

Give a DOLLAR, Get a DOLLARDepending on the grade level, at the end of our coin unit students had to give me $1.00 in coins (minimum of 2 different coins) and in return, they would receive a CHOCOLATE dollar coin. If their answer was incorrect, the were sent to the back of the line to try again.

Boys will be boys... and in this case it means making paper airplanes and launching them anywhere and everywhere in the classroom. Well instead of taking them away from something they are showing such great interest in, I decided to jazz it up a little bit and make it a fun AND learning activity. We started off by using the website www.foldnfly.com which offers you a large variety of different styled planes- depending on your preference (speed, velocity, style, distance, acrobatics...), then proceeds to show you step by step folding instructions. Students are instantly learning to follow instruction, vertical and horizontal lines, fine motor skills, mathematics and so on.

Our scoring chart consisted of...
Distance (calculated with measuring tape) Flight (how long was the paper plane in motion) Cool Moves (which planes made more twirls and swirls) Height (how high up did the paper planes go) Appearance (what was interesting about each) Here's some of our cool paper planes made following folding instructions from Fold' N Fly
WWW.PAPERLANES.WORLD
I then found another amazing website called www.paperplanes.world which I will be introducing to the classroom shortly. It gives you the opportunity to create a virtual airplane and place your choice of Canadian Stamp on it, then launch it into space so other people around the world can catch your airplane and stamp their own location. You can also use the net provided and virtually catch other paper airplanes flying around the world, see where they've landed and stamp it before again launching it back out into space. A great geography app for students to create and visit weekly for new Cities or Countries. |
KK#2 CODINGUsing MATHEMATICS, LANGUAGE AND CREATIVITY, the students came up with an entirely new language of written letters in the alphabet. The began writing codes on the chalkboard and in notes to one another to see if it could be cracked. We also used our coding chart as one of our questions during our Great Escape game.
