COMMUNITY MAPPING

For our "People and the Environment, Our Local Community" Unit, the grade 1's designed a map of the local neighbourhood which included various natural and built features such as a pond and the local bank.  Students then connected their maps together using roads, trees, sidewalks and pathways.

YOU CAN DO IT
The 5 keys to success

This was a unit I introduced to grade 3/4 during my teaching practicum in Australia. The school's motto was focused around these 5 keys to success...

Persistence

        Getting Along

Organization

                      Confidence

                                Resilience

For one of these lessons in our YOU CAN DO IT unit, I focused on "overcoming obstacles", and the key to Persistence. Students wrote down their biggest obstacles in life. We then briefly discussed why they chose that obstacle, how difficult it makes for achieving success, and what sorts of things we can do to overcome them. Next I held up my own obstacle (Fear!) and motioned for them to copy me as I ripped that obstacle into pieces! Students were stunned, then took great joy in destroying their "I cant's" to reaching success.

Students entered the classroom in disarray- chairs were barriers, desks were turned and a row of witches hats were laid out. This non-verbal communication had students perplexed but curious. The message here was to take note of the obstacles in their way to success, will they let a few measly chairs create a barricade to education? This activity challenged the students by helping them seek out personal obstacles and goals.

GUESS THE BABY!?

The children brought in baby photos of themselves to display on our decorated cork board, we numbered each photo and then created a baby-guessing template for students and staff to use.
